We’ve all heard of Park & Ride, but what’s Walk & Ride? The Walk & Ride message is simple:
Accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity everyday as part of a healthy lifestyle… include walking as part of your journey.

Healthy Ireland (HI), Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS)
and Transport for Ireland (TFI) will conduct a Walk and Ride pilot .
How does it work?

Walk and Ride encourages people to make walking
part of their daily travel routine. The initiative promotes
a minimum target of 30 minutes walking every day.
If 30 continuous minutes isn’t possible, it can be
broken down into three bouts of ten minutes each.

Many of us do this as part of our daily routine already. We walk ten minutes from home to the bus or train, with another ten minute walk to get from the station or the bus stop to work. In many cases all that’s needed to reach the 30 minute target is a ten-minute top-up.

What's the problem?
A recent Eurobarometer survey* on sport and physical activity
revealed that one in three Irish adults don’t take any exercise
whatsoever, an 8% increase in four years. The results of our
increasingly sedentary lifestyle are all around us:

So what's the plan?

Walk and Ride is a highly visible public awareness initiative that will generally improve health in our society and help tackle the obesity epidemic by promoting a simple solution – walk more often

Walk and Ride is an intervention that promotes physical activity, particularly walking. It encourages people to leave the car at home, walk to their local bus stop or station, and after their bus or train journey walk to their destination - to work, shopping, or leisure. This will enable people to accumulate the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity and at the same time make a significant contribution to the environment.
